Triangle-Squares... Squared

How to make
Multiple HALF- and QUARTER-SQUARE TRIANGLES
(all at once!)

Use two squares; one light one dark.  (See Quilter's Math Formulas below)

RECOMMENDED:  Quilt in  a Day's TRIANGLE SQUARE UP RULER.

1) Draw diagonal lines in an x from corner to corner on wrong side of light square.

2) LAYER squares, right sides together and STITCH 1/4" from drawn lines,
on both sides of each line.  Press flat.

3) CUT stitched square into fourths + and along drawn lines x as diagrammed
PRESS each unit toward the darker fabric.  Square up as needed, trimming dog ears.
YIELD: 8 HALF-SQUARE TRIANGLES
~~~~~~~
To turn HST units into QUARTER-SQUARE TRIANGLES.
continue with these instructions:
4)  DRAW a diagonal line on the backs of four of the HST units.
5) LAYER squares atop the other HST units with right sides together, alternating prints.
6) STITCH a scant 1/4" from the drawn line on both sides.  PRESS flat.
7)  CUT stitched units on drawn diagonal line, PRESS.
8) TRIM each unit to desired size. Trim dog ears.  REPEAT with remaining sets.
YIELD:  8 Quarter-Square Triangles
~~QUILTER'S MATH FORMULAS~~
HALF-SQUARE = FS + .875 (7/8")
Finished Size plus 1/2" for side seam allowances plus 3/8" for diagonal seam.
(Aw, heck, I just round up to 1" for good measure then trim to size!)
YIELD:  2 HST units (Half-Square Triangles)
HALF-SQUARE, SQUARED = 2 x (FS + 1")
YIELD:  8 HST units
QUARTER-SQUARES = FS + 1.25" (1=1/4")
Finished size + 1/2" for side seam allowances plus 3/4" for two diagonal seams.
YIELD:  2 QST units (Quarter-Square Triangles)
QUARTER-SQUARES, SQUARED = 2 x (FS + 1.25")
YIELD:  8 QST or Hourglass units
